A Legacy of Compassion Lives On
In Houston, few names are as warmly remembered as Dr. Red Duke—a physician whose early advocacy helped shape the future of pet therapy. Though he is no longer with us, his spirit of compassion continues to ripple through hospitals and the arts across the city.

Today, that legacy lives on in a new, fluffy “Dr. Duke.”
Duke is the beloved companion of Dr. C. Richard Stasney, a renowned ENT specialist and founder of the Texas Voice Center. Together, they serve as a Faithful Paws certified pet therapy team, bringing comfort, connection, and moments of joy to the halls of Houston Methodist Hospital in the Texas Medical Center.
When “Dr. Duke” enters the Emergency Department, smiles erupt and a familiar cheer echoes: “Dr. Duke is in the building!”
In an environment that is often fast-paced, high-pressure, and emotionally demanding, even a brief moment of levity can make a meaningful difference. Armed with a canister of whipped cream, the duo invites staff to share a moment of delight—offering pup cups and a brief, meaningful pause in otherwise demanding days.
It’s a simple gesture, but one that carries real impact.
For a nurse coming off a long shift, a few minutes with Duke can feel like a reset. For a physician moving from one critical case to the next, it’s a rare opportunity to pause. For staff carrying the emotional weight of patient care, it’s a reminder that they are seen, supported, and appreciated.
As one healthcare worker shared after a visit, “You don’t realize how much you need that moment until it’s right in front of you.”
Dr. Stasney has spent his career caring for others, supporting patients and healthcare professionals alike. In retirement, that commitment continues in a deeply personal way. Through pet therapy, he and Duke bring relief, laughter, and a sense of calm to those navigating long shifts, difficult cases, and emotional strain.
Their visits are not just about smiles—they are about connection. A quick interaction with Duke can shift someone’s entire day, offering a reminder that even in the most clinical of environments, compassion still leads.
Another staff member put it simply: “He brings the kind of joy you can’t manufacture in a hospital.”
Whether making hospital rounds or attending community events, Dr. Stasney and Duke embody the powerful intersection of medicine and compassion. They carry forward a legacy that began decades ago—one rooted in the understanding that healing isn’t just physical—it’s emotional, it’s relational, and sometimes, it comes with four legs and a wagging tail!
Dr. Stasney and Duke are just one of more than 200 Faithful Paws therapy teams who generously give their time to bring comfort and unconditional love to hospitals, senior communities, schools, and more throughout the Houston area.
Every visit, every interaction, and every moment of connection is a reflection of what pet therapy makes possible and why it continues to matter so deeply to the people it touches.
If you want to know what it takes to become part of this work, or how you and your pet can make a meaningful difference in the lives of others, we invite you to learn more about joining the Faithful Paws community. From training and certification to first visits, every step is designed to support you in bringing comfort, connection, and compassion to those who need it most.
Thank you to Dr. Red Duke for paving the way, and to Dr. Richard Stasney and the fluffy “Dr. Duke” for continuing that legacy with compassion, joy, and a whole lot of heart.
