What It Takes to Be a Pet Therapy Team

Behind the Magic of Every Visit

When you see a therapy dog gently resting its head on a child’s lap or calming an anxious hospital patient with a single nuzzle, it might look like magic. And in many ways, it is.

But just like a ballerina gliding effortlessly across a stage, the grace and ease of a successful pet therapy visit is the result of extensive preparation, dedicated training, and deep teamwork between a handler and his/her pet. At Faithful Paws, our pet therapy teams make it look easy—but behind every tail wag and warm greeting is a lot of heart, effort, and intentional practice.

More Than Just a Friendly Pet

While many pets have sweet dispositions, not every animal is suited for therapy work. Our member teams go through a thorough evaluation process to ensure each dog, cat, and rabbit is both emotionally and physically prepared for the important role of bringing comfort and joy to others.

Therapy animals must be calm, reliable, and comfortable in a variety of unpredictable environments. They need to be able to handle:

  • New smells, sounds, and sights
  • Crowds of people or close physical contact
  • Unusual equipment (wheelchairs, IV poles, walkers)
  • Excited children or emotionally overwhelmed adults

And it’s not just about the pet—handlers play an equally vital role in maintaining the team’s composure, adjusting to unexpected circumstances, and engaging positively with everyone they meet.

The Role of Training: Laying the Foundation

At Faithful Paws, we’re proud to be Houston’s only pet therapy organization with an in-house training program. Our team includes a professional dog trainer with over 15 years of experience,  a training coordinator, and a team of veteran Faithful Paws members who guide new members through every stage of preparation.

Our training includes:

  • Five two-hour, hands-on training sessions teaching and reinforcing Canine Good Citizen skills, pet therapy protocol, safety, and visit expectations.
  • Mock visits and teaching scenarios to help both pets and handlers practice real-world visit experiences.
  • Learning about the ever-evolving science and numerous benefits of Pet Therapy.

This training ensures that every therapy visit is not only meaningful but safe, for our teams, the people we serve and the animals who serve them.

“One of the things that sets Faithful Paws apart is how invested we are in making sure our teams are truly prepared. It’s not just a one-time evaluation—it’s a continuous relationship, and we’re there every step of the way.”

5 Signs Your Dog Might Be a Great Therapy Dog

Not every dog is meant for therapy work—but many are, and sometimes it starts with just a few key personality traits. If you’re wondering whether your pup might be a perfect fit for the Faithful Paws family, here are five signs to look for:

1. Your dog is calm in new environments.
Loud noises, wheelchairs, elevators—therapy dogs encounter it all. If your dog takes unfamiliar settings in stride, that’s a great sign.

2. They love people—all people.
A therapy dog doesn’t just bond with their family. They need to be open, affectionate, and gentle with strangers of all ages, appearances, and energy levels, without being “overly friendly”.

3. They’re tolerant and well-mannered.
Therapy visits often involve unexpected touches, hugs, or even the occasional tail tug from an excited child. A good therapy dog remains composed and friendly, even when things get unpredictable.

4. Your dog listens well and follows commands.
Basic obedience isn’t optional—it’s essential. Therapy dogs must reliably respond to cues like sit, stay, come and leave it, especially in sensitive environments.

5. They’re just as happy giving as receiving.
Therapy dogs have a special kind of generosity. If your dog seems to thrive when comforting others, seeks out connection, and intuitively responds to people in need, you might have a natural on your hands.

Practice, Practice, Practice

Just like a dancer repeats a move a thousand times before performing it on stage, our pet therapy teams build their skills and confidence through practice.

Practice might include:

  • Walking calmly on a loose leash  through busy stores or parks to get used to distractions
  • Visiting friends or neighbors to practice social greetings
  • Working on basic commands like sit, stay, come, leave it, and watch me
  • Role-playing unexpected scenarios with fellow members

We often remind our members that this work is a journey. Even the most experienced therapy pets continue to learn, adapt, and grow.

The Power of Active Experience

Being a great therapy team doesn’t end with training—it continues through active participation in visits.

Faithful Paws visits more than 240 facilities each year to schools, libraries, hospitals, assisted living facilities, and other community locations. We offer our teams plenty of flexibility in choosing visits that work for their schedules and interests, but we strongly encourage regular participation.

Why is regular participation so important?

  • Ongoing visits help strengthen the bond between handler and pet.
  • Teams stay sharp, adaptable, and confident.
  • Frequent exposure helps pets become more resilient and calm.

Many of our members say that they feel their dogs actually know when it’s time to put on the vest—and they light up with purpose and joy before every visit.

It’s a Commitment—and a Gift

Becoming a certified therapy team takes effort. It means showing up, putting in the time to train, and being mindful of your pet’s comfort and wellbeing at all times. But the rewards? They’re immeasurable.

  • You’ll witness lives being touched in meaningful ways.
  • You’ll grow closer to your pet through a shared purpose.
  • You’ll become part of a warm, welcoming community of people who care deeply about making a difference.

Being part of Faithful Paws isn’t just about showing up with your pet—it’s about showing up with heart.
