Celebrating 28 Years of Unconditional Love: The Journey of Faithful Paws Pet Therapy
In 1997, a simple act of compassion sparked a movement that would touch thousands of lives across the Greater Houston area. Faithful Paws Pet Therapy was born from the vision of Connie Richards, who, after a life-changing accident, sought to bring comfort and healing to others through the companionship of animals.
Today, as we celebrate 28 years of service, Faithful Paws stands as Houston’s largest pet therapy organization, boasting over 200 active volunteer teams and providing more than 15,000 visits annually to schools, hospitals, senior living communities, and more.
A Legacy of Healing and Connection
From its humble beginnings, Faithful Paws has grown into a beacon of hope and joy. Our mission has remained steadfast: to bring unconditional love to those we visit through the healing power of pets.
Our certified therapy pets—dogs, cats, and rabbits—alongside their dedicated handlers, have brought smiles to countless faces, offering comfort during challenging times and celebrating joyful moments.
In-House Training: Ensuring Excellence
What sets Faithful Paws apart is our commitment to excellence through our in-house training program. Each volunteer team undergoes rigorous training, which culminates with obtaining the AKC’s Canine Good Citizen certification. This unparalleled training and certification ensure that our therapy animals are well-prepared to provide safe and effective support.
Our training not only equips our teams with the necessary skills but also fosters a deeper bond between handlers and their pets, enhancing the therapeutic experience for all involved.
Impact Across the Greater Houston Area
Over the past 28 years, Faithful Paws has made a significant impact across various communities:
- Hospitals and Rehabilitation Centers: Providing comfort to patients and staff alike.
- Schools and Libraries: Encouraging literacy and reducing anxiety among students.
- Senior Living Communities: Offering companionship and joy to residents.
- Hospice and Palliative Care Facilities: Bringing peace during difficult times.
Our visits are tailored to meet the unique needs of each facility, ensuring meaningful interactions that uplift and heal. In addition to hospitals, schools, and senior communities, Faithful Paws therapy teams also participate in corporate wellness programs and community events, where the presence of a calm, friendly pet can boost morale, reduce stress, and create a sense of connection.
We are proud to offer all visits to nonprofit organizations at no charge. For businesses and other for-profit groups, we kindly request a donation to help support and expand our mission—ensuring we can continue bringing comfort, joy, and healing to those who need it most.
Inspiring Stories from Our Volunteers
Marty & Jax: A Bond Forged in Healing
Marty met Jax, a gentle mixed-breed dog, at an AKC dog show in 2015. At the time, her husband Gene was battling dementia, and Marty hoped that Jax could bring joy into their lives. While Gene’s condition limited their interaction, Jax became Marty’s steadfast companion, offering comfort during challenging times. Together, they began visiting hospitals and care centers, with Jax’s calm demeanor bringing smiles to many. One memorable moment was when a nurse shared that a severely depressed patient found hope by looking at Jax’s “before and after” photos on a bulletin board, inspiring her to believe in the possibility of change. Karen & Omri: A Natural-Born Therapy Dog
Karen adopted Omri from a shelter in 2015 when he was just three months old. From the beginning, Omri displayed an innate love for people, often choosing human interaction over playing with other puppies. Recognizing his potential, Karen joined Faithful Paws, and together they have completed over 800 visits. Omri’s friendly nature and unwavering enthusiasm have made him a favorite among those they visit, spreading joy wherever they go. Omri has now retired from his service with Faithful Paws, his legacy and impact will live on forever! Learn more about Karen and Omri
Jeannie & Mr. BoJingles: The Therapy Bunny
Jeannie’s journey with Faithful Paws began when her son was hospitalized, and therapy dogs brought comfort to their family. Inspired, she adopted Mr. BoJingles, a miniature Holland Lop rabbit, from a petting zoo. With his calm demeanor and love for cuddles, Mr. BoJingles became a certified therapy pet. Dressed in charming outfits, he delights children and adults alike, performing tricks and bringing smiles during their visits to various facilities. Get to know Jeannie and Mr. BoJingles a bit more
