Pet's Breed:

Shetland Sheepdog – Sheltie

Why We Joined Faithful Paws:

I have always loved working with animals and spent five years working as a veterinarian technician. Before that, I had the opportunity to travel the world with my husband’s career and saw firsthand the needs of pets and people. Faithful Paws had a wonderful reputation, and I wanted to be part of bringing joy, knowledge, and love to those who need it.

Where We Visit:

Houston Methodist West, Sugar Mill Elementary, Buckner Parkway Place, and a variety of one-time visits

Our Story:

Presto, who completed training in late 2019, loves to snuggle! Every time he snuggles in bed with a patient and puts his head on their chest, it’s amazing to see how he has just the right words and touch. Frequently, there is a paw in their hand, as if he is truly holding their hand. Many people cry when this happens – it is a much-needed release from their stress. Presto also works his magic with the senior community, especially memory care patients where his gentle snuggle will bring many people out of their selves and into the world, if only for a few moments. Care givers report that many seniors/memory care people we visit don’t necessarily remember they had a dog next to them, but they are happier all day, and that makes for a better day for everyone!

Presto loves to sing (bark), “How much is that doggie in the window?” with the pianist at one of the hospitals we visit. He’s able to bark on cue every time! Good boy, Presto!

Rhapsody completed her training in May of 2024. Therapy dogs always graduate from our program well-trained and ready to serve. They do well in the beginning, but it is wonderful to see them grow into their role. In the few short months since Rhapsody has graduated, I have seen extraordinary empathy and connection with the people she visits and also a spunky side to bring laughs to people! She is truly the ‘diva’ of the family and loves to wear bows and dresses! Oh yes, she loves to have her picture taken, too.

Both Presto and Rhapsody love doing tricks and reading with children. The tricks make everyone smile and show off another skill set that these dogs have to bring joy and love to those we meet.

I would like to recognize Kyrie, my sheltie who passed away in 2023 from bladder cancer. She was my first therapy dog and taught me so much! She had a strong spirit and continued her visits through treatment, making her last visit two days before she passed – doing tricks for high school children and loving every minute – always the brave and spicy girl! She was the most beautiful soul, inside and out!
