Why Become a Member of Faithful Paws
Have you ever looked at your pet and thought, “You bring so much happiness to my life—I wish others could experience this, too?” That instinct is the heart of what makes a great therapy team. At Faithful Paws, we help transform that beautiful bond between humans and their animals into something even more powerful: healing, comfort, connection, and joy!
Becoming a member of Faithful Paws means joining a group of dedicated volunteers who believe in the life-changing impact of animal-assisted therapy. Whether you’re exploring the idea or ready to jump in, this post will walk you through the many benefits of membership—and why it might be one of the most rewarding experiences you and your pet will ever share.
Confidence in Safety, Health, and Training
When it comes to visiting hospitals, senior care communities, schools, and other sensitive environments, safety is a top priority—not just for the people we visit, but for our volunteers and their pets, too. That’s why every Faithful Paws member can take comfort in knowing we uphold the highest standards for health and training.
All therapy pets must be:
- Fully vaccinated and in good health
- Well-socialized and calm around new people and environments
- Comfortable being touched and interacting with a variety of individuals
- Able to remain focused and follow commands, even in busy or distracting settings
And don’t worry—you and your pet don’t need to have all of these skills right away. That’s where our highly competent training team comes in. Our trainers are experienced with advanced qualifications, compassion, and commitment to help every team succeed. They’ll guide you through each step of the process and help prepare your pet (and you!) for certification.
Training with Faithful Paws includes:
- An introduction to our mission, structure, and expectations
- Training sessions for you and your pet, focused on behavior, safety, and handler responsibilities
- Mentorship from seasoned members who walk alongside you during your first visits
- Ongoing support and guidance from our dedicated leadership team and your fellow volunteers
You’ll never be alone on this journey. We’re with you every step of the way.
Strengthen the Bond With Your Pet
Many of our members report that becoming a therapy team deepens the bond they have with their pet in unexpected ways. Your therapy dog, cat, or rabbit is not only your companion, but also becomes your partner in service.
Through training and visits, you’ll have the opportunity to view your pet in a new light. You’ll navigate new environments together, respond to people in need as a team, and learn to read each other’s cues with remarkable clarity. The result? A closer relationship built on trust, communication, and shared purpose.
Some of the remarkable ways the human-animal bond grows through pet therapy:
- You learn to work together in a variety of real-world situations
- Your pet becomes more attuned to your emotions—and vice versa
- You develop a deeper sense of responsibility and connection to your pet’s wellbeing
- You feel profound pride as you witness your pet comfort someone else
Therapy work allows pets to grow into their role in ways that are enriching for them, too. They often become calmer, more confident, and more focused when they have a “job” to do—especially one that involves bringing people unconditional love and joy.
Experience a Deep Sense of Purpose
Volunteering as a therapy team is about giving—and about growing. Members often describe a powerful sense of purpose and fulfillment that comes from sharing their pet’s joy and love with others.
As a Faithful Paws volunteer, you might visit:
- A child reading aloud to your dog at a literacy program
- A college student dealing with exam stress who finds calm in petting your pup
- A hospital patient who hasn’t smiled in days—until they meet your animal
- An older adult in a memory care unit who suddenly lights up, remembering their childhood pet
These moments may seem small, but they can make a profound difference. And when you and your pet are the ones making them happen, it changes you.
Many handlers say that this work becomes one of the most meaningful parts of their lives. Whether you’re recently retired, an empty nester, or simply looking for a way to give back, therapy volunteering helps you connect your time and talents in a truly impactful way.
Join a Like-Minded Community
At Faithful Paws, you’re not just joining a program—you’re becoming part of a supportive community. It’s a community that’s been growing since 1997, built on shared experiences, mutual support, and a love for animals and service.
One of our newest initiatives for members is the mentor program, where experienced members are paired with new teams to help ease them into their first visits. This creates lasting friendships and a strong sense of support that may continue long after training is complete.
As a member, you’ll enjoy:
- A warm, welcoming community of fellow animal lovers
- Opportunities to connect through training sessions, group visits, and events
- Ongoing mentorship and encouragement from seasoned volunteers
- A sense of belonging and purpose that extends beyond each visit
Many members say they didn’t realize how much they needed this community until they joined it.
Let Us Handle the Logistics
Coordinating therapy visits might sound overwhelming, but good news—you don’t have to worry about that part! Faithful Paws manages all the scheduling and communication with our members and the facilities we serve, making the process easy for everyone. We handle the details so that when visit day arrives, our teams and the facilities can simply focus on the joy and connection that make pet therapy so special.
We provide:
- A detailed calendar of available visits throughout the year on weekdays and weekends
- Visit options in a wide range of settings (schools, hospitals, senior centers, libraries, universities, and more)
- Clear instructions for each visit, including contact info, special notes, and guidelines
- A friendly, organized support team to answer questions and help with logistics
Whether you want to volunteer once a month or every week, there’s a visit (or several) to match your interest and availability.
Variety and Flexibility
With thousands of therapy visits coordinated each year, Faithful Paws offers flexibility and variety to suit every member’s preferences. You can choose the visits that resonate most with you—whether that’s quiet, one-on-one reading sessions with children, energetic college stress relief events, or gentle interactions with seniors in care facilities.
Here’s just a sampling of the kinds of visits our members enjoy:
- Hospitals: Bring comfort and encouragement to patients, families, and healthcare workers
- Tiered Senior Living Communities: Spark joy and connection in residents with stories, smiles, and gentle affection
- Schools: Encourage literacy by participating in reading programs or bringing calm during testing seasons
- Colleges & Universities: Help students de-stress during midterms and finals
- Libraries: Create positive experiences around books and learning with pet-assisted reading sessions
- Special Events: Participate in community outreach events that raise awareness for therapy work
You choose where you and your pet shine best.
